Our Mission

We wish to make together a public pedestrian pathway surrounded by trees, pollinator habitat, and edible landscaping for the benefit of neighbors and San Franciscans and that honors the Ohlone peoples on whose unceded land we live.

Who are we?

Friends of the Mission Greenway is working with the Mission community to transform Parcel 36, a historic railroad throughway in the heart of the Mission, into a collaborative, visionary hub for pollinator gardens, small scale food production, education, connection, and environmental stewardship.

It is up to us all to reshape one of the few remaining pieces of open land in San Francisco into a green space for the young and old alike and the greater ecosystems in which we reside—let us seize this opportunity!

The Opportunity

The Mission Greenway will be:

  • A permanent community asset for all residents of the Mission and the city at large.

  • A shared community space that connects people across cultures and generations and offers space for growing plants that benefit people and the environment.

  • A rare, undeveloped green throughway and park in a dense urban neighborhood.

The Context

The current owners of the property are unknown. For more details on what we’ve learned about the ownership situation, see our blog.

Since its inception, this parcel has been a publicly accessible property and used as such by pedestrians. The public started getting pushed out in recent decades: by fences and locked gates and by parcel-users bullying pedestrians by falsely claiming it was their private property. Currently, the parcel is being defaulted into private parking, by virtue of gate-key access for a lucky few, in addition to storage of heavy equipment and shipping containers. Friends of the Mission Greenway believes that this open space in the Mission should be available to ALL residents and visitors and the pedestrian pathway should be given back to the public.
